You don't have to pull out your polyplastic-interwoven aluminum framed folding chair to enjoy the latest trends in trailer parks. Austin's newest trailer parks provide picnic tables and umbrellas for comfortable seating while you consume a wide variety of good eatsoutdoors--served from an array of airstream trailers and other mobile carriages strewn about vacant lots in a modern day circling of the wagons. Westward Ho? NO.. most of these culinary camps are in South and Central Austin Texas and serve some great grub.
I had the pleasure recently of trying Gourdough's. It's an airstream beached in a vacant lot with a few other restaurants-on-wheels on South Lamar. Interestingly enough, this lot offers a spectacular Downtown Austin skyline view befitting the priciest South Austin condos...especially at night. Gourdough's serves "big fat donuts with a variety of fillings, from the savory (fried chicken and honey) to the diabetic-coma-inducingly sweet (marshmallow with chocolate fudge icing, all dipped in actual fudge)". I had fresh strawberries and cream cheese frosting on mine. It was awesome and completely fatteningly tasty.
So trailer parks, long a staple of South Austinlife (sorry I couldn't resist), have come back in vogue with a new found respect--not for living in, but for dining out and soaking up a true Austin experience. And, they are convenient to many Austin condo projects and Central Austin neighborhoods.
