I always like to hear when iconic Austin landmarks get saved and renewed to live another day. The marquee at the Varsitytheater, located on "The Drag" by the University of Texas, has been a prominent campus area landmark since the 1930's. The space has been a record store and book store since it's days as a theater ended around 1990. It has been vacant for the last few years since Intellectual Property Book Store closed.
According to the Austin Business Journal, a $2.5 million facelift is on the way. 3 new restaurants including a Coffee Bean will occupy the space. The marquee will be maintained although enhanced to include additional signage. The building will be refurbished and the vintage exterior will be modified but not wiped away, leaving Guadalupe Street's 24th street block an intact nod to decades past.
This rehab is a good sign for the University neighborhood. The city and UThave long talked about a general street scape overhaul of The Drag but delays have resulted from discussions of what type of public transit should play a role and what merchants truly want for the area. At least The Varsity will undoubtedly remain a welcome constant as West Campus evolves.

A recent search in the Austin Texas MLS shows 112 single family homes under $350,000 are availble within 2 miles of The University of Texas at Austin campus. These homes range from decades old to brand new and range from 500 square feet to 2100 square feet. Tree lined streets and vintage homes are the norm in many of these UT area neighborhoods--although new infill construction is available too. The UT campus is just north of downtown Austin and a wide variety of neighborhoods house students, faculty and others.
